I recently came across a social media post asking, “Ladies, what do you consider “hung”?” Reading the answers, I came to the conclusion that almost everyone overestimates penis size. Why do both men and women overestimate penis size even when presented with penis size facts?

As a rule of thumb, both men and women overestimate penis size. According to studies, the average penis size is only 5.16 inches. But on social media both men and women claim that the size is much larger. A number of factors lead both men and women to overestimate penis size.

So let’s take a look at why people overestimate penis size. Why do both men and women do the same thing? What is behind this phenomenon? And what can be done about penis size?

The Penis Size Post

Ok, we all know that men lie, exaggerate, and overestimate penis size, but I never realized that women did this just as much as men. I came across a social media post that asked the question, “Ladies, what do you consider “hung”?”

Reading the responses in this post would lead you to believe that it is not uncommon for men to have 8+ inches of penis. It would even be likely that sexually active women would meet up with a 10″+ penis at some point.

Over half of the men responding had 8″+ of penis length. The ladies were quick to swap stories of having sex with men that had 9″+ of penis. Any man that was reading this post and had a 5-7″ penis would definitely feel like they were lacking in the penis size area.

Even though the question was directed at women, it seemed that both men and women were eager to answer with some rather large numbers. The common number seemed to be 8-9″+ was hung. But how does that match up with reality?

So what is a big penis?

The highly respected BJUI study, Am I Normal? took the penis size measurement from over 15,000 men from different studies and determined that the average erect penis would be around 5.16″ (13.12 cm).

This study only took into account measurements that were taken by medical professionals and did not rely on self-reported measurements (apparently they were worried about people lying about their penis size).

Penis size was measured along the top of the penis from the pubic bone to the tip of the glans. This means no measuring on the sides or bottom of the penis.

There are other smaller studies that show a slightly larger average erect penis but most studies show an average erect penis of under 5.5″.

Additionally, these studies show that extremely large penises are very uncommon. In the reported results of the Am I Normal study, the longest reported penis had a length of 8.27″ (21 cm). This would barely crack the threshold of “hung” according to social media.

According to the study, the top 25% of men would have a penis length of around 5.70″ (14.5 cm) or more, the top 10% of 6.1″ (15.5cm) or more, the top 5% of 6.5″ (16.5 cm) or more, the top 1% of 7.09″ (18 cm) or more.

So if you went by the social media standard, many men that fall into the top 1% of penis size would not be considered to be “hung”. I would think that the top 5% would be considered to be hung so it would be in the neighborhood of over 6.5″.

Why Men Overestimate Penis Size

I think that it is pretty obvious why men overestimate penis size. When you want something to be true, it is easy to lie, exaggerate, or find dubious evidence to confirm what you want to be true.

It is important for many men to feel like they have a large penis. The penis is the most obvious physical symbol of masculinity. Penis size is often discussed in popular culture and has come to be associated with sexual prowess and desirability.

It is no wonder that men overestimate penis size. Many men just out and out lie about their penis size. After all, most people are never going to actually see your penis so why not tell a story to make yourself feel more manly.

But others are just making an honest mistake in their penis size estimates that may just be influenced by what they are hoping for. You do not learn in high school about how to measure a penis so it is easy to understand how penis size measurement mistakes could happen.

In order to actually compare penis size between men there needs to be a consistent method of taking the measurement. The official way is to take a measurement along the top of the penis from the pubic bone to the tip of the glans.

Taking your penis measurement using this method will give a much smaller penis size than measuring the penis from the bottom or the sides. I can add more than an inch to my penis size if I measure from the side rather than the top.

If you do not know that there is an official way to measure penis size, you would obviously want to go with the longest measurement that you could get. This would lead to end up with men having larger penis size estimates.

Why Women Overestimate Penis Size

I found it to be really strange that women overestimate penis size as much as their male counterparts. When you read social media posts about penis size it almost sounds like old men telling fishing stories. Everyone has to of caught one bigger than the others.

I think that there are a couple of reasons behind all of this. First of all, most women want to portray their current boyfriends/husbands in the best light. They may be unsure of the actual length and just want to make their endowment sound as good as possible.

Just like men, women have never been shown how to measure a penis. They are often looking at a penis from the side or the bottom so this may lead to enlarging their penis size estimates.

They may have never measured a penis so they just may assume that everything that they hear is true. So if they have been told by everyone that there are tons of 10″ penises out there that the bigger penises that they encounter must be 10″+.

These expectations will obviously impact our perception of reality. If you think an average penis is between 6-7″ long, you will assume that most men you see will fall into this range and think that most men that you have been with fall in this range even if you never measured them.

The Role of the Internet and Porn in Penis Size Estimates

The internet and porn have really messed up our penis size estimates. The internet and porn are full of claims of 10″, 11″, or even foot-long penises.

Just do a Google Images search for a 12″ penis picture. You will get a ton of dick pictures including some truly huge dick pictures.

What you won’t see is any pictures of a penis with a ruler held up along the top of the penis. You may see a few tape measures but these are almost always a metric cm tape measure (12 cm is just under 5″).

You can make a penis look huge by placing it in the foreground of the picture. Everything behind or below the penis will seem smaller by comparison, therefore, making the penis look much larger.

Porn uses a ton of techniques to make pornstar dicks to look even bigger. They use angles and smaller female stars to make everything look bigger.

I do not ever find any ruler-measured penises that are over 9″ long. If so many penis size estimates are for 9″ or more, why is the internet missing all of the pictures?

Even though there is a total lack of evidence, we hear so much on the internet and porn about these huge dicks that you just assume that they have to exist.

The Role of the Kinsey Report in Penis Size Estimates

A lot of the misconceptions about penis size may come from the Kinsey Report. This 1948 study was one of the first comprehensive studies on erect penis size. The results were much discussed and were accepted by many as fact for decades.

This report found that the average penis was 6.2 to 6.4″. This is significantly larger than current studies. According to the Kinsey Report, the average erect penis would be in the top 10% of erect penis size according to the more modern reports.

Why the huge difference? The Kinsey report relied on self-reported measurements. The men involved marked off their length with a mark on a piece of paper. It was not taken by a medical professional. This could definitely lead to some data bias.

This report has become accepted as fact for so many years that it is no wonder that our size concepts are out of whack. It is no wonder that we overestimate penis size.

My Experience With Penis Size

I have to admit that I am rather obsessed with penis size and have done whatever I could to increase my size. I did not bother with penis size estimates and measured my penis in the clinically accepted method of a dorsal(top) measurement from the pubic bone to the tip.

I constantly hear them talking about my huge penis that is anywhere between 10″ and 12″ long. I know this is not the case because I know it is significantly shorter than that.

With the experience that my wife and I have had we can definitely say that people definitely overestimate penis size.

What Can Be Done About Your Penis Size

The internet is full of junk information about how to enlarge your penis. I have researched this issue and tried all of them in hopes of achieving penis enlargement. The truth is that there is no easy way to enlarge your penis.

We all had heard in our teens that the average penis size was six inches. Then some major studies showed that the average penis size was significantly smaller at 5.16 inches. Now there may be a reason to believe it is significantly larger. So why might the average penis size be bigger than we thought?

So let’s take a look at how this study impacts what we know about the average erect penis size. We will look at how the different studies determined the penis size of men, what the results were, and are these results significant. We will also look at what men can do about their penis size.

What a new study tells us about average penis size

A study out of King’s College in London indicates that the average penis size could be significantly longer than we previously thought. This study shows that there may be a major problem with many previously accepted studies on the average dick size of men.

Most previous studies have relied on stretched penis length as an accurate substitute for erect penis length. This study showed that this may severely underestimate the actual erect dick size of men.

This new study showed that the average erect penis length was 5.63 inches (14.3 cm). This is about a 1/2 inch longer than what is the commonly accepted average dick length.

You may say that this is only a half inch so what is the big deal? Well, in penis size a half inch is a lot. This represents an almost 10% increase in the average length.

Even more shocking is that this 5.63-inch length would be in the top 25% of all penises according to the currently accepted range of penis length.

What is the current accepted average dick size?

The currently accepted standard for average dick size is a study reported in the BJU International Journal of Urology.

This extensive 2015 compilation of studies involved the measurement of over 15,000 penises. According to this study, the average erect penis had a length of 5.16 inches and a girth (circumference) of 4.5 inches.

This study was a compilation of 20 other studies on average penis size. This study is considered the gold standard due to the size of the study and since all measurements were taken in a clinical environment by professionals and did not rely on men measuring themselves which is notoriously inaccurate.

However, almost all of the measurements in the study involved the use of measuring the stretched flaccid measurement of the penis. The researcher would stretch out the penis and measure the penis along the top from the pubic bone to the tip. This was thought to be a good estimate of the erect penis length.

What about this other study on dick size?

This other study entitled “Analysis of the inter-observer variability in penile length assessment” looked at the average penis size in a different way.

This study involving 201 took the measurements of both the stretched flaccid penis and an actual erect penis. They found a significant difference in the two measurements.

The men who were involved in the study achieved a fully rigid erection after receiving intracavernosal injections. This would be an injection similar to Trimix which I have tried before.

Once the full erection was achieved, a researcher measured the penis along the top from the pubic bone to the tip. This erect measurement was compared to the stretched flaccid measurement. The average erect penis length was 5.63 inches and the average stretched penis length was 4.61 inches.

This represents a huge variance in the difference between these two techniques.

Some other interesting info from the study. The average erect penis circumference was 4.6 inches (11.6 cm). The longest erect penis measured in this group was 7.48″ (19 cm) and the shortest was 3.15 inches (8 cm).

The standard deviation in penis size was 0.79 inches (2 cm). So technically speaking, a normal-sized penis would be with two standard deviations of the mean. So anything less than 4 inches would be abnormally small and anything larger than 7.25″ would be abnormally large.

Other studies on average erect penis size

There have been some other studies that look at the average erect penis length of men. These studies also show an average length that is longer than the studies with stretched flaccid lengths.

In the article Do White Men Have A Big Penis?, a British study on the average erect penis size of Caucasian men showed the average penis size to be 5.6 inches.

In the article Do Middle Eastern Men Have Big Penises? Seriously measuring up, erect penis measurements were taken of Saudi Arabian men and the average penis size was found to be 5.64 inches.

This all seems to be very consistent at around that 5.6-inch mark for average erect penis size.

Our personal observations on average penis size

We find that the study on erect average penis size is more in line with our personal observations of penis size than the stretched penis length study. My wife and I are part of the swinger lifestyle (see our sister site SwingerLifestyleGuide.com | Your Swinger Lifestyle Resource).

As part of that lifestyle, we have gone to many clothing-optional resorts where people engage in open sexual activity. We have seen thousands of erect dicks and are really sure that the average is much more than 5.16 inches.

Of course, men who go to this type of resort tend to be a little bigger. This is not anything inherent but is more so that men who are self-conscious of their penis size tend not to go to a place where it is going to be on display. This would skew the numbers a little towards a larger size but the 5.63″ average size really is a lot closer to our observations.

Does it matter if the average penis size is bigger?

Yes, we think that it really matters to determine an accurate average penis size. We all know that a huge number of men are concerned about their penis size.

Without having an accurate number, how does anyone really know if they should be concerned? Penis size is not easily changed but there are a few things that men can do to enlarge their penis. So why shouldn’t men have a good idea of the average erect penis size?

We are tired of people giving grief to men that are concerned about their penis size. Men get treated like lunatics if they even mention to their doctor that they are concerned about their penis.

This is really unfair. Nobody is treated like that when they want to change any other physical characteristic. Losing weight, putting on muscle, coloring your hair, breast enhancement, face lifts, tummy tucks, and more are all accepted and celebrated. But if you are a man worried that you are small, then you are a crazy pervert or something.

Average penis size is constantly portrayed in the media as being important. Women talk about it but then tell you that it is not important. The only ones that don’t seem to be obsessed with it are the medical profession.

I am not saying that anyone should obsess about it. Obsessing about anything is bad but there is absolutely nothing wrong with looking at your options when you are unhappy with your penis size.

Where should average penis size studies go from here?

We definitely think that there should be a lot more studies into the average penis size of men. The studies have been really small and inconsistent in techniques and findings.

This study mentioned here was a good study and I believe their findings that the stretched length was less than the erect length. However, they did not provide much information about if you could use stretched length to approximate erect length.

This subject is still very taboo and we hope that in the future there are mainstream studies that really look into this question that is important to so many men.

Is there anything that actually works for male enhancement?

Some of the most common questions that we get have to do with the penis size of different ethnic groups. One ethnic group that is rumored to have big penises are Middle Eastern men. So do middle eastern men have big penises?

In general, one good scientific study and anecdotal evidence seem to indicate that Middle Eastern men may have slightly larger penises. The limited evidence shows that Middle Eastern men have penises that are about 1/2″ longer than the worldwide average.

So let’s look at the facts behind Middle Eastern penis size, what the science shows, how Middle Eastern dick size compares to the rest of the world, and What Can Be Done About Your Penis Size if that is a concern for you.

The Scientific Evidence on Middle Eastern Penis Size

There is a great scientific study on the penis size of Middle Eastern men. A 2015 study from the Journal of Sexual Medicine entitled Erect penile dimensions in a cohort of 778 Middle Eastern men took a good look at Middle Eastern penis size.

In this study, the erect penis size of 778 Middle Eastern men was taken in clinical settings in Saudi Arabia. These men had erections that were induced by Quadrimix injections which generally result in extremely firm erections.

Clinical penis measurements are much more common in Saudi Arabia than in the USA or Europe because of the custom of “premarital checks” in Saudi Arabia. The purpose of these checks is to ensure that penis size, function, and fertility are all normal.

The erections were then measured using a rigid ruler along the top of the penis. They took measurements of skin-to-tip length and bone-pressed pubic bone-to-tip length. The bone-to-tip length is considered a better comparison number because it helps reduce variations due to weight.

The mean (average for this group) bone pressed length was 5.64 inches (14.34 cm). The median (half longer, half shorter) bone-pressed length was 5.71 inches (14.50 cm).

So basically, the average dick size for Middle Eastern men was found to be 5.64 inches.

The longest penis measured in the study was 7.87″ (20 cm) and the shortest one was 2.76″ (7.0 cm). According to the study, the normal range of penis size for Middle Eastern men was 4.18″ (10.62 cm) to 7.11″ (18.06 cm) with approximately 95% of men falling in this range.

An additional piece of interesting information was the average penis thickness for Middle Eastern men was 4.52″ (11.50 cm). They also found a direct correlation between penis length and penis thickness.

How does Middle Eastern dick size compare to the world average?

Based on the Middle Eastern dick size study, it would appear that the Middle Eastern man may have a slightly larger penis size than the world average.

The largest study into penis size was conducted by the BJU International Journal of Urology. This extensive 2015 compilation of studies involved the measurement of over 15,000 penises. According to this study, the average erect penis had a length of 5.16 inches and a girth (circumference) of 4.5 inches.

If both studies are accurate, it would indicate that the average Middle Eastern dick size is about 1/2″ longer than the worldwide average dick size. The penis girth of Middle Eastern men was about the same as the worldwide average.

The normal worldwide range of penis size would be 3.9″ to 6.5″ which is shorter by about a 1/2 inch from Middle Eastern penis size as well.

Why the Studies May Be Wrong

There are a couple of reasons that the findings from these studies may be wrong. First of all, although the methodology in this study appears to be great, it is only one study and it would be nice to see another large-scale study confirming the data.

The more troubling aspect that may indicate a problem is the methodology used in the worldwide study. This study was a compilation of 20 different studies from around the world. In most of these studies, they used stretched penis size as a measurement to approximate erect penis size.

There are now some indications that stretched penis size may underestimate the erect penis size of the man being measured. If this is the case, this could account for the variation as the study of Middle Eastern men’s penis size used the more accurate actual erection measurement.

Our Anecdotal Observations of Middle Eastern Dick Size

My wife and I are swingers (see our sister website SwingerLifestyleGuide.com | Your Swinger Lifestyle Resource) and frequent visitors to clothing-optional resorts which means that we have literally seen thousands of dicks from all different races and ethnic groups.

I would say we have seen more than many urologists and I would guarantee that we have seen more erect ones than most urologists.

Our personal observation is that we have not noticed much difference in penis size between the races and ethnic groups including Middle Eastern men. The only difference that we have noticed is that Asian men do appear to be slightly smaller than the other groups.

This is still totally anecdotal. We have seen very few Middle Eastern men at these spots. These are just our best observations from our trips.

Of course, there are huge variances in every group. So you will find small ones and huge ones in every group with a lot in between.

Does Penis Size Even Matter?

Another question when it comes to Middle Easter penis size is does it even matter. We believe from our experience that penis size does matter but it is not the most important thing.

Studies have shown that women prefer a penis that is significantly larger than the average penis. The best study shows that women prefer a penis that is 6.4″ long. This means that women prefer a penis that is 13.5% bigger than the average Middle Eastern penis size.

Another interesting statistic from the study, a full 20% of women admit to ending a relationship due to their partner’s penis being too small. To make matters worse, another study shows that 16% of women that stay in the relationship admit to being unhappy with the size of their partner’s penis (source).

The good news if you have a small penis is that there are numerous factors that women consider more important than penis size. Good looks, sense of humor, occupation, and even wealth are usually much more important to a woman than penis size. But it is still a factor.

So Do Middle Eastern Men Have Big Penises?

When it is all said and done, we do think that Middle Eastern penis size may be slightly larger than the worldwide average. If all things are factored in correctly, the average Middle Eastern penis size is probably less than a 1/2 inch larger than the worldwide average.

These variances in individual Middle Eastern penis size would make it hard to say that any individual has a large penis without actually checking it out. Even the study on Middle Easter penis size showed that many of the men had a penis size less than the world average. Just a few more were larger than the worldwide average.

What Can Be Done About Your Penis Size?

Whether you are worried about Middle Eastern dick size or your dick size in general, there is something that a man can do to improve their size.

No magic pills or anything like that is going to work. Actually, increasing penis size is possible but it does require work.

The only scientifically studied method of penis enlargement that has been shown to work is the use of penis traction devices.

According to the study found in the British Journal of Urology, men using penis traction devices showed that with proper use they achieved an average of almost an inch in length gain in a few months. Men that completed the study gained between 0.2 – 1.22 inches (0.5 cm and 3.1 cm) in four months.
